Tik, Tok…Boom

With Montana banning TikTok last week, followed by TikTok suing Montana for breach of first amendment rights, many have started considering what a post-TikTok world looks like. The discussions on a ban of the service center on concerns about privacy and security and how data is saved and used – which were recently revealed to be less than stellar – in China where TikTok is headquartered. At Reelay, we are both users of the service and feel our application is a strong contender to fill the void left behind if TikTok were to go away. (Note: we are a company based in the United States, and all of our user data is held securely on US-based servers.) To fully understand what would happen if TikTok were banned in the United States, along with its ramifications on our service, we came to a few conclusions.

Firstly, the ban on TikTok in the United States would be a significant blow to the platform. With millions of active users in the country, the loss of the US market would be a considerable setback for TikTok. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, would lose out on potential advertising revenue and growth opportunities. This could result in a decline in the platform’s overall popularity and usage worldwide.

Secondly, the ban on TikTok would significantly impact the creators and influencers who rely on the platform for their livelihoods. Many TikTok creators have built up a large following and have established themselves as influencers within their respective niches. A ban on the platform would mean that these creators would lose access to their audience and have to find alternative platforms to continue producing content. This could result in a significant loss of income and influence for many creators.

Thirdly, a ban on TikTok would also have broader economic implications. Many businesses, especially small and medium-sized ones, rely on TikTok for advertising and marketing purposes. A ban on the platform would mean that these businesses would have to find alternative advertising and marketing channels, which could be costly and time-consuming. This could result in a decline in revenue and growth for these businesses, which could have broader implications for the US economy.

Fourthly, a ban on TikTok could also lead to an increase in the use of other social media platforms, such as Instagram, YouTube, and, dare we say it, Reelay. While these platforms are already popular, a ban on TikTok would mean that more users would migrate to these platforms, potentially leading to oversaturation and increased competition for attention and engagement.

Finally, a ban on TikTok would also have implications for US-China relations. TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, and concerns have been raised about the potential for the Chinese government to access user data through the platform. If TikTok were to be banned in the United States, it could escalate tensions between the two countries, potentially leading to broader economic and political consequences.

With all that said, there are some excellent alternatives for TikTok, especially those with enhanced security protocols. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  1. Reelay: Obviously, we’re a bit biased, but the fact remains that Reelay is a fun app powered by a welcoming community and the movie reviews provide users with excellent direction on which films to add to their watchlists.
  2. Instagram Reels: Instagram Reels is a feature within the Instagram app that allows users to create short-form videos up to 60 seconds long. Reels offers a variety of editing tools and effects, making it a great alternative to TikTok.
  3. Triller: Triller is another short-form video app that allows users to create music videos and share them with friends and followers. It also offers a range of editing tools and effects, including AI-powered auto-editing.
  4. Dubsmash: Dubsmash is a video-sharing app that focuses on lip-syncing and dancing. It allows users to create short videos with music and share them on social media.
  5. Byte: Byte is a short-form video app that the co-founder of Vine created. It offers a similar experience to TikTok, with the ability to create and share short videos with various editing tools.
  6. Likee: Likee is a popular video-sharing app that allows users to create and share short videos with various special effects and filters. It also has a community of users who share their videos and interact with each other.

These are just a few examples of the many available TikTok alternatives. Each platform offers its own unique features and community, so it’s worth trying out a few different options to see which one best fits your interests and style.

The final chapter of TikTok has yet to be written, but a more significant ban of the app would have far-reaching ramifications – both sociological and political. While concerns about privacy and security are important, policymakers should consider the broader economic and social implications of a ban on the platform before taking action. Meanwhile, we’re strengthening Reelay, helping power users unlock the app’s full potential, and welcoming new users with open arms.

CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: @medusaoblongato

Erik Ringman

Around the office, we call him “the man, the myth, the medusa!” always accompanied by the exclamation mark. Erik Ringman (www.eriktclayton.com) has been entertaining us with his Reelays since the very beginning, and we look forward to each of his hilarious and insightful reviews. So, this week, we decided to dive into the man behind the long-flowing golden locks.

Reelay: So, what are your top 5 favorite films?

Erik: Sammy Davis eternally played the top ten game, so know you’re holding me to an even tighter standard. It’s the most unobjectionable pick, but 2001 has to be in there; it’s truly perfect and leaves one with a feeling of peace amidst the infinitely crushing universe. In a similar vein – though way more personal – is Southland Tales. It’s a turning point for so many things in it and beyond it, captures the moment it’s satirizing flawlessly, and is a laugh riot I never tire of sharing. I’ve seen Richard Kelly present the film in person, and he’s a huge inspiration. As a native of film’s home, Mulholland Drive is both a loving and poisonous letter to Hollywood by one of my favorite film creatives and while Tropic Thunder & Holy Motors do the same thing in radically different ways, MD has a soft spot for me. A toss-up twixt Apocalypse Now and Mad Max Fury Road as the most best-designed, constructed, and executed films ever, but the latter’s more fun. You guys are making this hard: there are many neon-soaked, mentally-spiraling, love-affirming, belief-challenging, or intimately hilarious ones I want to pick for slot five…so I’ll go Intolerable Cruelty. This is a five-star comedy unlike anything else.

How did you hear about Reelay?

I’ve known [Reelay Co-Founder] Anthony for years and had the fortune to watch Reelay blossom from literal scratched notes to alive, functioning community with a life of its own. I have always been rather anti-gadget, and my interest in an app was limited until one conversation where he painted the picture (brilliantly deploying a movie reference, no less) and I understood that inside this little movie app could be the cure to social media as we know it. And at that moment, I said, “I’m in.”

Which users are some of your favorite follows on Reelay?

Filmaniac has a taste for the unusual, visceral, or challenging and a quiet comfort talking about it that I enjoy. Bigflops has such raw, honest reviews. Cevinkookman is a comedic genius who inspired my style of Reelaying. Phallixander’s tastes and knowledge are broad – he’s not locked into a style, rather a true movie maven and expresses himself with beautiful vulnerability. Echowood is a fun and lively gentleman from whom I’m always glad to see new reviews. And of course Marta.Mcfly, who, through a combination of deep passion, refined knowledge, and radiant presence, has got my number in more ways than one. I’ll leave it at that 😉

What’s your most controversial movie opinion?

I like Tenet.

What elements do you think make a good movie?

Funnily enough, music, score, and sound design. They’re less explicit than visuals and so separate the good from the great, and every most memorable/powerful sequence from film I can remember is so thanks to its sonic component. That said, show, don’t tell: in the same sense as instrumental music trumps lyrical music, a movie that conveys something instead of explaining it is so much more captivating. There’s hardly any dialogue in the first twenty minutes of WALL-E. I love it. You could watch Playtime without speaking English and laugh your ass off.

If you were to work on a movie/tv show, what position in-front of or behind the camera would best fit you?

Grew up intending to direct, and that hasn’t changed. Production appeals too. People tell me I’d be a good actor but I was a shy kid and terrified of it. Nowadays it’d probably be good therapy. Editing is the part of filmmaking that excites me the most.

Do you have a favorite quote from a movie? If so, what is it, and which movie is it from?

“It can only be found by those who already know where it is.” -Captain Jack Sparrow.

How many movies do you watch a week?

One to four. But I get a solid few hours of T.V. in there too.

What is the most underrated movie of all time?

Death to Smoochy. Legit perfect, and nobody ever brings it up.

When you aren’t watching movies, how do you spend your time?

I’m a neon artist; work on my cars; like to roller skate but don’t do it enough; dance, tantra, and psychological shadow work are all important to me.

Cannes Do

With the Cannes Film Festival fully underway in the beautiful Cote D’Azur – and films getting praised (Black Flies, May December, et al…) and panned (we’re looking at you, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) left and right, we thought it’d be a good time to refresh you on proper French phrases with their root in cinema.

The expression faire son cinéma, literally “to make one’s cinema,” means “to be dramatic.” So, if someone is being dramatic, you can say: Arrête de faire ton cinéma! Stop being so dramatic!

Another expression is faire tout un cinéma, literally “to make a whole cinema,” which means “to make a big fuss.” For example: Mon fils fait tout un cinéma à chaque fois qu’il doit aller chez le médecin. My son makes a big fuss every time he has to go to the doctor. Ce n’est pas la peine d’en faire tout un cinéma. It’s not worth making a big fuss about it.

The expression se faire des films, literally “to make oneself some films,” means “to imagine things,” “to get carried away,” or “to get ahead of yourself.” Alternatively, you can say se faire tout un film, “to make oneself a whole film.”

Take a look at these examples:

Si tu crois qu’elle va changer d’avis, tu te fais des films. If you think she’s going to change her mind, you’re imagining things.

Je me suis fait tout un film. I got carried away.

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about these cinematic French expressions.

The Doctor is In

In filmmaking, script doctors play a vital yet often overlooked role. While the screenwriter lays the foundation for a story, the script doctor brings a unique set of skills to the table, refining and enhancing the screenplay to elevate it to its full potential. We delve into the world of script doctors, exploring their crucial role in the movie-making process and shedding light on the intricacies of their craft.

  1. Assessing the Script: When a script doctor joins a movie project, their initial task is to evaluate the existing screenplay thoroughly. They analyze the story’s plot structure, character development, dialogue, pacing, and overall coherence. Through this thorough assessment, script doctors identify areas that need improvement and devise strategies to enhance the script’s effectiveness.
  2. Strengthening Characterization: Compelling characters lie at the heart of every memorable film. A script doctor works closely with the screenwriter and director to refine the characters, ensuring their motivations, conflicts, and arcs are well-defined and authentic. By crafting multidimensional characters with relatable traits, script doctors inject depth into the story, fostering emotional connections between the audience and the on-screen personas.
  3. Polishing Dialogue: Dialogue serves as a crucial vehicle for storytelling, character expression, and audience engagement. Script doctors possess a keen ear for dialogue, refining it to be authentic, impactful, and in tune with each character’s voice. They eliminate unnecessary exposition, infuse wit or drama where appropriate, and streamline the conversations to enhance the narrative flow.
  4. Enhancing Structure and Pacing: A well-crafted script follows a coherent structure, ensuring that the story unfolds in a captivating manner. Script doctors scrutinize the script’s pacing, identifying sections that may lag or lack necessary momentum. They rearrange scenes, tighten sequences, and introduce or remove elements to ensure a seamless and engaging narrative progression.
  5. Balancing Tone and Genre: Maintaining a consistent tone and effectively capturing the essence of a particular genre is a delicate art. Script doctors possess a deep understanding of various storytelling styles and are adept at harmonizing the script’s tone with the intended genre. Whether it requires injecting humor into a drama or intensifying suspense in a thriller, they skillfully navigate the script’s tonal landscape to maximize its impact.
  6. Collaborative Approach: Script doctors work collaboratively with the screenwriter, director, and other stakeholders to ensure a cohesive vision. They embrace feedback and engage in creative discussions to refine the script further. This collaborative approach fosters an environment where diverse perspectives converge, ultimately shaping the script into its best possible form.

Script doctors are unsung heroes in filmmaking, wielding their expertise to elevate scripts and breathe life into stories. Through their careful analysis, precise revisions, and collaborative spirit, they contribute to creating memorable movies. Their craftsmanship enables filmmakers to transform good scripts into great ones, amplifying the impact of storytelling and captivating audiences worldwide. So, the next time you find yourself captivated by a powerful movie experience, remember that behind the scenes, a script doctor may have worked their magic to make it truly extraordinary.
